AEI Hopes to Serve Movie You'll
Love
Chi-Li Wong reports that AEI will be signing (after the collegiate
tennis season is over) Sheila Johnson who at 60, is the oldest tennis
player in the collegiate ranks and first-year GCU coach Greg Prudhomme
who was faced with the daunting task of turning around an ailing tennis
program. Enter Johnson, who had been taking private lessons from Prudhomme.
Coincidentally Sheila had last played collegiately for Arizona State
in the mid-1960's and still had one year of eligibility remaining.
With only three weeks to put together a team and one player short
Greg thought outside the box and recruited Sheila who has since helped
the Antelopes turn a 1-10 program into an 8-8 regional qualifier.
They went to Hawaii to compete in the nationals...
from Honolulu Star-Bulletin:
At 60, Sheila Pearl Johnson is the oldest tennis player in the
collegiate ranks...Her first trip to Hawaii is the culmination of
what she calls "the perfect storm"...First-year GCU coach Greg Prudhomme
had an open roster spot....
"I knew how good she was," Prudhomme said. "She's ranked No. 3 in
her age-group nationally, has a ton of experience. I had one scholarship
left and I offered it to her."
Johnson has been featured on the CBS Evening News and National Public
Radio, and in Sports Illustrated and USA Today. Her inspirational
story has a potential book deal in the offing as well as a movie.
Atchity Entertainment International is tossing a film deal her way
- after the season is done because of NCAA rules -- with Meryl Streep,
Diane Keaton and Kathy Bates being suggested to play Johnson...Since
AEI has made films that have starred Angelina Jolie, Prudhomme thought
it a no-brainer that Jolie's husband - Brad Pitt - should play him...

Abramovitch to adapt Diehl's spy novel
Breaking Ball Films' Scott Abramovitch and Lonny Dubrofsky have
acquired feature rights to William F. Diehl's pre-WWII spy novel 27,
with Abramovitch adapting.
Story, originally called "The Hunt," centers on a wealthy American
ex-bootlegger who attempts to thwart a Nazi agent who plans to kidnap
a group of VIPs and hold them hostage in exchange for President Roosevelt's
promise that the U.S. will stay out of the war.
Diehl, who died in 2006, was best known for thrillers "Sharky's Machine"
and "Primal Fear," both made into features.
The rights deal is the first made by Atchity Entertainment Intl. for
Diehl's estate, controlled by his widow Virginia Gunn Diehl.

It’s gratifying to see that Larry Thompson’s So
Help Me God is about to appear from Tom Doherty Books, as
a lead title in April. Take a look at the
ad that will start showing up throughout the country and click
through to amazon.com to buy the book. It’s been a long road for Larry,
to whom I was introduced by my Houston director Fred Griffin, and
he deserves the kind of advance orders his book is enjoying - especially
from Levy Distributors. I knew his brother Tommy (Blood and Money,
Serpentine) years ago in Los Angeles P.E.N.
Larry, a trial lawyer, is every bit as talented as a writer and I
know this book is the first of many ideological thrillers we’ll see
from him. His second, Insanity, is already penned and in the
hands of the publisher.

More than anything I - and the others who attended - came away with

Racing
The Dark
Like the other women dwelling on their seismically active island,
Lana plans to become a diver for the jewels within the fish of the
freshwater seas. Her first dive, however, turns up a rare jewel that
marks her as a woman of power and causes her to flee her island home
with her family in search of a teacher who can prepare her for the
danger that lies ahead. Johnson's first novel presents a coming-of-age
story with a strong female protagonist and an unusual and exotic setting.
For most collections. (Johnson, just 25, is currently at work on the
sequel volume to this planned trilogy).
Time Out Chicago called it:
"a highly imaginative tale that embeds the story with enough action
to appeal to the young-adult crowd, and enough ideas for their parents"
